James Moseley R I P

I just learned this sad news earlier today. One of the last icons of the Golden Age of UFOlogy, James W. Moseley, passed away thirteen days ago on the 16th of November at the age of 81. Moseley, editor of "Jim Moseley's Book of Saucer News" (Saucerian Books, 1967) and co-author of the entertaining and informative memoir "Shockingly Close to the Truth!" (Prometheus Books, 2002), remained an active UFOlogist for six decades while wearing many different hats along the way: publisher, editor, journalist, skeptic, believer, hoaxer, even pre-Columbian treasure hunter.

Moseley's long-lived newsletter "Saucer News" (which, in more recent decades, morphed into "Saucer Smear") published touchstone articles over the years by such UFOlogists as John A. Keel, Gray Barker, Allen H. Greenfield and Timothy Green Beckley. It was through "Saucer News" that Keel's field reports about the now infamous West Virginia "Mothman" sightings first reached the general public. (See, for example, pp. 24-25 of "Saucers News" #68, published in the Summer 1967 when the Mothman sightings in Point Pleasant were still in full swing.)

Perhaps most important of all, however, is the fact that Moseley was the first writer to study the people who "investigated" UFOs rather than the UFOs themselves. One could say that this metacontextual approach to UFOlogy, combined with his puckish sense of humor and trickster-like sensibilities, made Moseley the first "consciously" postmodern UFO investigator.

The Cosford Incident

On the 30th and the 31st of March 1993 hundreds of people including police officers and military personnel reported seeing UFO's over the skies of England. The first sighting was reported in Somerset by a police officer and a group of scouts. They reported seeing a UFO which they described as looking like two concordes attached side by side, the sighting was also reported by numerous people in the quantock hills area a short while after. A family in Rugely in Staffordshire reported seeing a disc shaped UFO which they believed to be hundreds of feet in diameter. They followed the UFO in their car and thought they witnessed it land in a field nearby but when they got to the scene the UFO had completely disappeared. There were also dozens of reports of a triangular UFO also flying slowly and silently over the area.

A patrol of RAF police officers in RAF Cosford reported seeing a UFO flying over the base at a tremendous speed around 1,000 ft off the ground. They said the UFO was clearly visible but made no sound whatsoever. Later on the same day a Meteorological Officer at RAF Shawsbury also reported the same UFO. He describe it as being slightly smaller than a Boeing 747 and was flying at around 30-40 mph. He then witnessed the UFO to hover over a nearby field and fire a beam of light at the ground and start to scan the area as if looking for something. He heard a low humming sound emanating from the craft and stated it was quite unpleasant to listen to. When the beam retracted he noticed it didn't look natural and retracted slowly rather than just switching off. There were three further sightings at 21:30, 22:10 and 22:40 which were all reported to RAF Finingley. Numerous police officers throughout South Wales and Devon and Cornwall had also reported seeing a UFO over the course of these two days.

Radar data from the time show inconsistencies but was inconclusive with any proof of what was flying around the UK over the course of those two days. There were some accusations of black projects by the US military but the US military were also receiving UFO reports and were equally accusing the UK of having some involvement. Again as always the sightings have never been explained, they were investigated by the ministry of defence and other than theory's blaming space debris and Russian satellites there has never been a conclusive explanation. Due to the fact so many people including civilians, police officers and military officers had witnessed the UFO's they didn't try to blame weather balloons or the planet venus this time.

He had a criminal record. He was convicted of theft when he was 19, and he left school to become a hotelier. He was convicted of embezzlement after leaving that job. He took another hotel position, and he stole money there, too, by falsifying records in order to obtain tens of thousands in fraudulent loans to finance his interest in space aliens and what the court later called his "playboy lifestyle." The court psychiatrist declared him a pathological liar. Eventually, he would be convicted of embezzlement and fraud yet again, serving a year in prison. In 1960, two French authors who were interested in the occult, Nazis, UFOs, and H. P. Lovecraft put out a book called "Morning of the Magicians" in which they tried to show that Lovecraft's vision of ancient astronauts could be correlated to the "occult" truths of Theosophy and the UFO movement. Jacques Bergier and Louis Pauwels put together the entire case for ancient astronauts as we currently know it-from the claims about ancient atom bombs to the claims about "impossibly" precise and heavy stone architecture. Their book inspired several by Robert Charroux, who presented Bergier's and Pauwel's discursive, disorganized ideas in a more popular and readable format. In 1964, von D"aniken simply appropriated this material wholesale for a magazine article, and on the strength of the magazine article, he received a book deal for what became "Chariots of the Gods " I've blogged about von Daniken's history of deceit before. It seems that the majority of opinions on this subject break off into two divergent paths of speculation in the area of UFOs and Biblical accounts.

1) All Biblical accounts of angels, giants and visionary phenomena can be explained by extraterrestrial alien activity.

Or

2) All UFOs are demonic entities that are here to deceive mankind.

Now both of these theories have their pluses and minuses. Both are equally valid, because frankly we really do not know what the UFO phenomenon truly is.

Let's take a close and critical look at both of these views.

("Please note: these are broad generalizations and are by no means an assault on the beliefs of others or an attempt at stereotyping those who believe in such theories. I am looking at the broad themes here, not the individual beliefs".)

1) BIBLICAL ACCOUNTS DESCRIBE EXTRATERRESTRIAL ALIEN ENCOUNTERS

In line with this theory is the belief that ancient man was too primitive to construct the Pyramids of Egypt and other monuments of the past. They even needed alien help to move from a nomadic hunter gatherer society to an agricultural one. Eric Von Daniken along with a host of others popularized this theory in the late 60s and early 70s till it has become a dominant theme of many paranormal writers when they look into the mysteries of the past. But its flaw is it lessens the infinite possibilities of man's imagination in whatever age he existed. Given enough time and human effort man can complete incredible tasks, and it truly has been a long time since anyone has had a truly uniquely original idea. From building enormous monoliths to inventing small volt batteries, ancient man was just as persistent and inventive then as he is now. To look at the legacy of ancient mankind and to simply proclaim 'aliens did it' does not do justice to the fortitude of our ancestors. Discoveries are lost and rediscovered throughout time. And ancient man was neither ignorant nor stupid.

Nevertheless there are a lot of interesting hypothesis that originate from this view of prehistory. To me the notion that the Ancient Babylonian Anunnaki were reptilian aliens is both intriguing and very Lovecraftian. And many ancient artifacts do look like they are attempting to describe aspects of the modern phenomena of UFOs as we encounter them today.

However in the end this argument just lacks soul. When you strip it down to the basics the basis of this worldview is that there is no God and the supernatural can be easily explained by science. It is basically Darwinist humanism with a touch of conspiracy theory. To me at least, it seems with the great sweeping creative and unrestrained panorama of myth from all cultures and all ages, if ancient man had been visited by extraterrestrials then he would have reported it as such. Perhaps not explicitly so, but the descriptions would not be directly 'religious' in theme unless these aliens posed as gods to deceive mankind. But if the alien visitors wanted to evolve mankind and knew there were no such things as gods, why would they pretend to be gods themselves? In the worldview of secular humanism religion is a step backwards in the evolutionary process of mankind, not a step forward. Why would they try to introduce a system of misinformation that is counterproductive to the evolution of humanity? Were the aliens trying to scam us? And why are they not still doing so today? They certainly have a fertile field to work with. The only explanation is the same one theorized by many proponents of a global government conspiracy to cover up the alien presence: someone has deemed that we are not ready to know the truth.

2) All UFOs are demonic entities that are here to deceive mankind.

The basic supposition of this thesis is that Satan is described in the Bible as the prince and power of the air ( Ephesians 2:2) and since UFOs are primarily an atmospheric phenomena the devil is suspect prime in these delusions to make man focus on the possibility that he is not the primary focus of the creation of the universe. If there are other worlds then that raises a whole unwanted rhetoric that has the potential to rock the Christian faith to its core. Other worlds might mean other gods or no God at all. What is our cosmological foundation if there are intelligent beings from other worlds interacting with our own? To make matters worse for those who hold these views, the themes and principles set forth by those who have had contact with these 'visitors' and the 'aliens' themselves are very humanistic and "New Age". The 'aliens' teach humans the universalism of religion and secular humanist ideology. These other worldly beings exhibit strange powers over the humans they interact with and therefore they must be demonic beings who have been sent by Satan to deceive mankind from the truth. They work in ways similar to medieval demonic infestations, where the person is visited at night by evil spirits and either possessed, molested sexually/physically or initiated into a series of oppression actions that lead to the destruction of their free will. This is all a plot by Satan to stage the End Times. Once mankind reaches a certain stage of total iniquity and they en masse abandon the faith and the Antichrist can rise to power. The message of the 'visitors' is just one piece of the puzzle that will doom the majority of mankind and lead to Armageddon.

Doomsdays Of Yesteryear The Zetas And Planet X 2003

With the earth now scheduled to end twice in the near future, once on May 21 of this year, and again on December 21 of 2012, let us look at at some of the previous times that the world ended. We will turn to the Zetas and the great Pole Shift that was going to be caused by a supposed "Planet X" in May of 2003.

Nancy Lieder

The "Zetas" are a supposed alien race whose messages are allegedly channeled by one Nancy Lieder of Wisconsin, seen here. (Usually she just goes by her first name). She began posting on the internet her messages from the Zetas in 1995, and soon acquired a considerable following among New Age, UFO, and Conspiracy believers. When the giant comet Hale-Bopp was discovered in 1995, Nancy proclaimed that it didn't exist - it was a disinformation campaign to distract people from the coming doom of Planet X.

According to Nancy's website, "The inbound Planet X was sighted at the coordinates given by the Zetas in early 2001, imaged in infrared twice in January, 2002, tracked by CCD images in late 2002 to early 2003, and thereafter photographed by amateur astronomers around the world. That a middle aged woman with a high school degree, who does not even know which end of a telescope to "look" into, could pinpoint the RA and Dec of the brown dwarf, Planet X, is astonishing, and speaks to the validity of ZetaTalk." This is, of course, pure nonsense. A few photographs were produced purporting to show Planet X, but there was so little information provided that it was impossible to say what they really were. Nancy boasted of a 68 percent success rate for seeing Planet X during April of 2003, but only for "those educated, who had done their homework and followed the imaging session, noted our words as to what to look for, and oriented themselves in the sky." Apparently other people didn't see anything. She further informs us that MJ12, the supposedly ultra-secret crashed UFO panel, has "committed suicide to prevent itself from being misused." Ten years after its alleged "discovery," no reputable astronomer, amateur or professional, has ever confirmed any sighting of the supposed "Planet X."

"According to the Zetas, Planet X was approaching earth in early 2003, to cause a "pole shift" and massive destruction on or about May 15. "The 12th Planet will be visible to the common man some 7 weeks prior to the shift, without the use of telescopes," says Nancy, meaning that it should have become visible around the end of March. "Planet X will have a distinct red appearance, with a roiling tail full of moons, that are more concerned with the dance between them than any affect the solar wind might have upon them. Thus, they swirl, and look like a dragon approaching, not" a straight line tail at all. Nevertheless, we anticipate NASA will explain the Planet X complex as any number of things, or rather their lackeys, who will natter the word on every Internet or media source that allows their nattering - asteroid bunch, passing comet, unusual comet, Mars closest pass in many eons, or whatever." In other words, by May of 2003 "Planet X" would be huge and impossible to miss, but the government will attempt to convince you that you are actually seeing something else. Nancy noted on her website that in December of 2002, the popular late-night radio host Art Bell interviewed Sylvia Browne, "the well-known psychic and author. And she disclosed she is no longer able to see the future beyond the summer of 2003." Bell also interviewed Ed Dames, who claims to have been a "remote viewer" employed by the CIA. Dames said that "he and his remote viewing team are no longer able to remote view the future beyond next summer." From this, Nancy deduces that there will "be" no future beyond the summer of 2003. The close approach of the mythical Planet X was supposed to cause a Pole Shift on the Earth, with massive accompanying destruction.Of course, it never happened.

During June of 2003, Nancy posted numerous accounts of supposedly bizarre phenomena such as unexplained booms, sunspots, a ring around the Moon, and the Sun "rising and setting in the wrong place." These were labeled as "signs of the times," and were attributed to the proximity of the dangerous Planet X. Nancy insisted that Earth's rotational stopping and flipping was indeed still going to occur, but she refused to specify the hour or date. Her followers were carefully noting the times of sunrise and sunset, and the position of the Sun going down, to see if Earth's expected careening might have already begun. But when these disasters failed to occur, most of her followers turned their attention elsewhere, to different weirdness.
