Why Ufos And Aliens Are Kept Secret

Since the 1930's and 40's they have been keeping UFO and Alien beings a secret maybe even longer. I heard a story told by Philip Schneider that in our secret archives somewhere there is documentation about an incident that happened in the 1920's. Authorities have been chasing a criminal somewhere in the south west. He ran into a cave and the authorities pursued, what they found in the cave was beyond their imagination. Alien beings and flying craft found in the 1920's must have been really something to conceive for someone back in the day. Phil doesn't tell much more of the story and I have not yet found much more information about it.

So why when the first UFOs sightings started happening and stories of abductions and things of that sort started did they decide to keep it secret?

The first guess I had was religion, there would be a lot of people pretty confused when they found that their god may not be the superior being that all had hoped.

Technology would be my second guess for a few reasons. I think all civilizations fear technology that is superior to theirs is a major threat for obvious reasons. If the energy sources are much more efficient than ours major corporations such as oil and coal would be in big trouble.

Dr Steven Greer gives a much better explanation than mine in this video.

What Dr Greer says certainly makes sense to me but what about you? Does anyone else have any thoughts?
