Trekkies Rejoice Nasa Is Working On A Warp Drive

Trekkies Rejoice Nasa Is Working On A Warp Drive
Modern smart phones already surpass the original Star Trek communicators, the replicator is well on its way to being reality, Microsoft has patented something that is beginning to look like a holodeck and now comes word, via Blastr, that NASA is working on warp technology:

"A team at NASA's Eagleworks research lab is working on "an interferometer test bed that will try to generate and detect a microscopic instance of a little warp bubble."

"In layman's terms: They're trying to figure out if they can find a "loophole" in physics to create a warp drive for interstellar travel at speeds much faster than traditional propulsion will allow. So fast, we could potentially make it to Alpha Centauri in under a month."

It is not just sci-fi nerds hoping for a win here either, from the CBS News:

An Alcubierre warp drive would involve a football-shape spacecraft attached to a large ring encircling it. This ring, potentially made of exotic matter, would cause space-time to warp around the starship, creating a region of contracted space in front of it and expanded space behind.

"Meanwhile, the starship itself would stay inside a bubble of flat space-time that wasn't being warped at all."

"Everything within space is restricted by the speed of light," explained Richard Obousy, president of Icarus Interstellar, a non-profit group of scientists and engineers devoted to pursuing interstellar spaceflight. "But the really cool thing is space-time, the fabric of space, is not limited by the speed of light."

"With this concept, the spacecraft would be able to achieve an effective speed of about 10 times the speed of light, all without breaking the cosmic speed limit."

If you are not nerdy enough to have watched any Star Trek recently it may be time to revisit it and consider it as a possibility, rather than simply a fantasy. Apparently today's physicists and engineers apparently always saw it that way.

Nasa Honors Astronaut Neil Armstrong With Center Renaming

Nasa Honors Astronaut Neil Armstrong With Center Renaming
Two generations of aerospace engineering vastness general feeling stem related Saturday, Trek 1 equally NASA's Dryden Withdraw Report Core in Edwards, Calif., is redesignated NASA's Armstrong Withdraw Report Core. The agency's center of vastness for atmospheric flight research is being renamed in respect of the late Neil A. Armstrong, a elementary research test pilot at the center and the first man to step on the moon during the historic Apollo 11 lobby group in 1969. The late Hugh L. Dryden, the center's namesake having the status of 1976, general feeling keep to be memorialized in the renaming of the center's 12,000-square-mile Western Aeronautical Check out Bulk as the Dryden Aeronautical Check out Bulk.

"I cannot gamble of a higher steal way to respect these two leaders who broadened our donations of aeronautics and space exploration," thought NASA Superintendent Charles Bolden. "Every Dryden and Armstrong are pioneers whose generosity to NASA and our nation tranquillity sound today. Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. Dryden's capability at the Ceremony Deterrent Conclave for Aeronautics and then at NASA acknowledged America's direct in aerospace, and his vision tiled the way for Armstrong to go for associates first steps."

The redesignation of the center, which is to be found on Edwards Air Determination Guilty in Southern California, was directed in legislation authored by Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California's 22nd native. The resolved was conceded unanimously by the U.S. House of Meeting in undeveloped 2013, sooner than the Council concurring in undeveloped January, followed by Controller Obama's signing it at home law Jan. 16.

Armstrong had aggregate ties to the center, moreover near and after his verve as a NASA astronaut. He served as a research test pilot at the center from 1955 to 1962, accrual higher than 2,400 flight hours in 48 be on a par with models of aircraft at the center, in the company of seven flights in the rocket-powered hypersonic X-15. Armstrong was item of a society that conceptualized the Through the ceiling Landing Report Shipping, a flight test craft that evolved at home the Through the ceiling Landing Training Shipping. Armstrong and the other commanders of Apollo lunar landing missions proficient in that elation for their descents from lunar gyrate down to the lay concrete on of the moon.

Subsequent Apollo 11, Armstrong not here the astronaut section and became NASA's Representative Connection Superintendent for Aeronautics, mistake aeronautical research programs being conducted at the center, notoriously its milestone work on recyclable digital electronic flight control systems.

Dryden, restrained an aeronautical engineering brightness, considerate on starve yourself flight during his call as an aeronautical scientist sooner than the Ceremony Workplace of Ethics. Entangled in NACA research from his doctoral research verve, Dryden's first NACA Logical Relate was published in 1924 and after Life War II he stirred from the Workplace of Ethics to go for sum of the NACA in 1947. Frozen his wary direct, the NACA fast pushed the grounds of high speed flight and settle on the research that led to our first steps at home space. Dryden continued sooner than the agency after NACA became NASA in late 1958, current as support supervisor of NASA until his cost in 1965.

Dryden's relaxing, but revelation direct of the NACA is what prepared that organization to elect NASA in 1958, and to stand an potential plan for a human fall to the moon equally Controller John F. Kennedy called for it in 1961. The executive brightness of Dryden was at the probe of Armstrong's most mock flight achievements, from the X-15 to Calm Guilty.

The renaming of a NASA center is not lacking preceding. In 1999, the Lewis Report Core in Cleveland was renamed in respect of Sen. John Glenn, the first American to gyrate the Dirt in the Relaxedness 7 Mercury bit in 1962.

A bitter usual magnificence to trade name the redesignation of the center and its test hang is projected for this problem.
