"STRANGE AND UNKNOWN "
EXPERTS DETERMINE AGE OF BOOK 'NOBODY CAN READ'
February 10, 2011 By Daniel Stolte The Voynich manuscript's unintelligible writings and strange illustrations have defied every attempt at understanding their meaning. (PHYSORG.COM) -- WHILE ENTHUSIASTS ACROSS THE WORLD PORED OVER THE VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT, ONE OF THE MOST MYSTERIOUS WRITINGS EVER FOUND - PENNED BY AN UNKNOWN AUTHOR IN A LANGUAGE NO ONE UNDERSTANDS - A RESEARCH TEAM AT THE UA SOLVED ONE OF ITS BIGGEST MYSTERIES: WHEN WAS THE BOOK MADE? Ads by GoogleMass Spectrometers - Quantitative ">University of Arizona researchers have cracked one of the puzzles surrounding what has been called "the world's most mysterious manuscript" - the Voynich manuscript, a book filled with drawings and writings nobody has been able to make sense of to this day.Using radiocarbon dating, a team led by Greg Hodgins in the UA's department of physics has found the manuscript's parchment pages date back to the early 15th century, making the book a century older than scholars had previously thought. This tome makes the "DaVinci Code" look downright lackluster: Rows of text scrawled on visibly aged parchment, flowing around intricately drawn illustrations depicting plants, astronomical charts and human figures bathing in - perhaps - the fountain of youth. At first glance, the "Voynich manuscript" appears to be not unlike any other antique work of writing and drawing.AN ALIEN LANGUAGEBut a second, closer look reveals that nothing here is what it seems. Alien characters, some resembling Latin letters, others unlike anything used in any known language, are arranged into what appear to be words and sentences, except they don't resemble anything written - or read - by human beings.Hodgins, an assistant research scientist and assistant professor in the UA's department of physics with a joint appointment at the UA's School of Anthropology, is fascinated with the manuscript."Is it a code, a cipher of some kind? People are doing statistical analysis of letter use and word use - the tools that have been used for code breaking. But they still haven't figured it out." A chemist and archaeological scientist by training, Hodgins works for the NSF Arizona Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, or AMS, Laboratory, which is shared between physics and geosciences. His team was able to nail down the time when the Voynich manuscript was made. Currently owned by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University, the manuscript was discovered in the Villa Mondragone near Rome in 1912 by antique book dealer Wilfrid Voynich while sifting through a chest of books offered for sale by the Society of Jesus. Voynich dedicated the remainder of his life to unveiling the mystery of the book's origin and deciphering its meanings. He died 18 years later, without having wrestled any its secrets from the book.

SCIENTISTS HUNTING FOR GIANT PREHISTORIC RAT FOSSILS STUMBLE ACROSS ANCIENT ROCK PORTRAITS
By Richard ShearsA team of scientists searching for fossils of giant rats from a prehistoric age have stumbled across an extraordinary 'gallery' of rock art portraits up to 12,000 years old.The Australian researchers were exploring a large cave on the north-east tip of East Timor, which gained independence from Indonesia after a bloody conflict in 2002, when they were stunned to find, by chance, a row of engraved faces staring at them from the wall.'Looking up from the cave floor at a colleague sitting on a ledge, my head torch shone on what seemed to be a weathered carving,' said Dr Ken Aplin of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, based in Canberra.

'I shone the torch around and saw a whole panel of engraved prehistoric human faces on the wall of the cave.'The local landowners with whom we were working were stunned by the findings.'They said the faces had chosen that day to reveal themselves because they were pleased by the field work we were doing.'
Dr Aplin and the team were working in the Lene Hara cave, a treasure trove of fossils and rock art, when they saw the faces.Known as petroglyphs, the carved images are frontal, stylised faces, each with eyes, a nose and a mouth. One even has a circular headdress with rays that frame the face.Using special testing techniques known as uranium isotope dating, scientists from the University of Queensland working with the CSIRO team, established that the 'sun ray' face was between 10,000 and 12,000 years old, placing it in the late Pleistocene period.

What has surprised the team is that the faces have not been discovered before - the cave has been visited by archaeologists and rock art specialists from around the world since the early 1960s Other faces were unable to be accurately dated, but are thought to be just as old as the 'sun ray' face. What has surprised the team is that the faces have not been discovered before - the cave has been visited by archaeologists and rock art specialists from around the world since the early 1960s.The earlier teams have studied other rock paintings, which include hand stencils, boats, animals, human figures and linear decorative motifs.Engravings of faces have been found throughout the Melanesian islands of the Pacific and in Australia, but the petroglyphs in the Lene Hara cave are the only ones known to have been dated to the Pleistocene period.Other art in the cave has been dated at around 30,000 years old.Last year the CSIRO announced that it had discovered evidence of an extinct species of ancient, giant rats - the size of small dogs - which is why they returned to the cave to look for fossils of the creatures. The CSIRO team's discovery of the rock portraits is published in the Journal of Antiquity.

A UFO in Suco
By Raul Oscar Chaves
This photograph was taken in the month of October 2009 from Cerro Suco, located in the vicinty of the town bearing the same name.
Conrado Pinamonti, a resident of Suco who was touring the Cerro, detected the movement of an unidentified flying object, obtaining the image presented here. Upon downloading it from his camera, he noticed to his surprise that it displayed an imprecise shape: it was saucer-shaped and noticeably large.
The existence of several bag silos -- employed for harvest grain storage purposes, as a part of rural tasks -- can be seen under [the object]. These silos have measure between 70 and 90 meters.
Likewise, but performing a comparative analysis and employing the height of the larger trees visible, which are around 20 meters tall, it becomes possible to determine that the object in question is at an altitude of between 150/200 meters, with an approximate length of 70 meters.

MOST PEOPLE, WHEN CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITIES AS TO WHAT UFOS MIGHT ACTUALLY BE, TEND TO LEAN HEAVILY TOWARD THE IDEA OF ADVANCED AIRCRAFT THAT ARE BOTH INTELLIGENTLY DESIGNED AND CONTROLLED. MANY REPORTS DO INDEED APPEAR TO INDICATE THAT THE OBJECTS SEEN APPEAR MECHANICAL OR OTHERWISE "MANUFACTURED," ALTHOUGH THERE ARE ALSO THE OCCASIONAL REPORTS OF RATHER AMORPHOUS "BLOBS" THAT SEEM TO HAVE LITTLE DEFINITE SHAPE OR FORM. THOUGH THE RANGE OF POTENTIALS FOR HOW AN ALIEN TECHNOLOGY MIGHT APPEAR TO US REMAINS VERY BROAD, PERHAPS THERE ARE OTHER POSSIBLE IDENTITIES WE COULD ATTRIBUTE TO AT LEAST SOME UFO REPORTS.
One unique (though perhaps unlikely) theory proposed a number of times over the years deals with the idea of "atmospheric lifeforms," as proposed by the likes of Charles Fort, Trevor James Constable, and Ivan Sanderson, among others. Essentially, this approach to various reports of UFOs supposes that some of the sightings might describe strange, atmospheric "beasts" that are essentially self-contained, energetic creatures.
Though the multitude of encounters detailing a more technological origin for UFO craft seems to leave little room for any credence to such ideas as "atmospheric beasts," perhaps engaging in a sort of "though game" with the subject could provide insights or some merit, by virtue of considering airborne anomalies from a less conventional perspective.
Generally, the idea of an atmospheric beast in the present context would involve a creature which either weighs less than air in a given atmosphere, or which may be capable of flying by some other means of wingless propulsion. With regard to research into the unexplained, one of the pioneering ufologists to take this approach with the study of unidentified flying craft was Trevor James Constable, a writer and researcher who outlined his ideas in the 1975 book "The Cosmic Pulse of Life" (somewhat sadly, I interviewed Constable a few years ago, and upon mentioning that I had obtained a copy of this book, he joked with me, "so you were the one who bought a copy!") Constable's idea of "critters" (photographs of which can be seen by clicking here) dealt with amoeba-like creatures that existed in Earth's upper atmosphere, and which occasionally fed on livestock and other creatures, hence seeking to explain some reports of animal mutilations that occur in conjunction with UFO sightings. As strange as such an idea may sound at first, even Carl Sagan had discussed balloon-like aliens that might be capable of existing in the atmospheres of distant gas giants the likes of Jupiter. Popular fiction writers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Ray Bradbury have dealt with such creatures as well, but since the majority of these sources for the lore surrounding jellyfish-like or amoebic creatures drifting around in the sky stems from either fiction or speculative science, many would argue that more fringe notions of the existence of such creatures were actually inspired by such works.
Nonetheless, during a conversation with a fellow researcher I had a few years ago, he divulged that during a conversation with a NASA astronaut who had worked with the space program years ago (who also asked to remain anonymous), his contact mentioned projects where he and others had observed strange "energetic forms" while monitoring spacewalks using visual apparatus that heightened visibility in the infrared range. Though my contact said the astronaut would not refer to the objects as "UFOs", he did mention that questions had arisen over whether they might be some form of energetic life. Furthermore, studies performed by NASA have also suggested the notion that plasma-based lifeforms might even come to exist in the vacuum of space.
If indeed "energetic life" were to exist, and if reports of glowing, amorphous blob-like UFOs were indicative of their presence, what might allow these creatures to produce such self-maintained illumination? Also, if they were consumers (as Constable proposed), it would have to stand to reason that they also produced waste. If not doing so in the conventional biological sense, could they perhaps do so through the release of heat or radiation? Radiation sickness is a common side effect afflicting those who have encountered a UFO, especially those which appear to be craft of intelligent design. It would be interesting to consider whether similar circumstances surrounded people's encounters with the less-tangible varieties of UFOs, also.
Again, while the supposition that UFO reports could be attributed to amorphous atmospheric beasts is unlikely at best, sometimes considering outlandish alternatives allows us to free our minds up to thinking in less conventional ways, also, and potentially even coming to unique realizations that contrast otherwise widely accepted views on certain phenomenon. What are your thoughts about atmospheric life, and could such species exist in places around the globe... or even in other parts of the universe?

( I think we have no idea about what happened and how. The more we learn the more it is obvious we have been wrong along the way. One day we may know but for now I believe we have miles to go before our past is clearly known or understood. )
KIN OF FAMOUS LUCY HAD FEET LIKE MODERN PEOPLE
WASHINGTON - Lucy's feet were made for walking. That's the word from a team of researchers who got a first look at a foot bone from this human relative who lived 3 million or more years ago, and concluded this ancestor was fully comfortable with life on the ground, rather than the trees.Carol Ward of the University of Missouri, and colleagues, report in Friday's edition of the journal Science that the discovery shows that ancient Australopithecus afarensis had feet similar to modern humans. The famous fossil Lucy is the poster girl for her group of ancient hominins. The study of her other bones showed she was able to stand upright. But no foot bones were found with her skeleton, so researchers have puzzled over whether she walked like modern people or was a blend of ground- and tree-dweller.The new discovery shows these relatives "were fully humanlike and committed to life on the ground," Ward said in a telephone interview from Africa. "It lays to rest the idea that they were a compromise."The new bone, discovered with other A. afarensis bones at Hadar, Ethiopia, is a metatarsal, one of the long bones connecting the toes to the base of the foot.It shows that Lucy's kin had arches stiffening their feet like modern people, as opposed to apes whose feet are more flexible for grasping tree branches. This was an important step in evolution, Ward explained. "This shows our early ancestor walked like we would walk. They were not shuffling, they were walking upright. which is a key feature of our branch of the family tree.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110210/ap on sc/us sci in lucy s footsteps
