The discovery of another bright light on the dwarf planet Ceres has NASA scientists perplexed as the US Dawn probe prepares to enter the orbit of the largest object in the asteroid belt and possibly resolve the mystery.
The images taken nearly 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers) from Ceres show that a bright spot on the planet scientists previously discovered appears next to another slightly darker spot, NASA said in a news release.
The light appears in the same basin as the other spot, images released by NASA show.
"This may be pointing to a volcano-like origin of the spots, but we will have to wait for better resolution before we can make such geologic interpretations," Chris Russell from the Dawn mission said.
The Dawn probe will enter the orbit of Ceres March 6. Scientists expect to receive better views of the mystery lights as the spacecraft closes in and spirals nearer the dwarf planet.
"The brightest spot continues to be too small to resolve with our camera, but despite its size it is brighter than anything else on Ceres. This is truly unexpected and still a mystery to us," said scientist Andreas Nathues who is in charge of the camera.
Scientists detected water vapor emitting from Ceres in 2012 and NASA reports the surface of the body contains "water-bearing minerals."
Launched in 2007, the Dawn probe was sent to investigate the two largest bodies in the asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter.
Dawn explored giant asteroid Vesta starting in 2011, providing measurements and images. After 2012, the probe left Vesta's orbit and began its journey to Ceres.
Ceres has a diameter of about 590 miles (950 kilometers) and Vesta has a diameter of about 326 miles (525 kilometers).

A fast-moving object flashing three distinct colours was reported whizzing past the sky in Rush, Kentucky, on 15 April.
The sighting, alleged to be that of an Unidentified Flying Object, was reported on Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). However there were no photos or videos of the object except for an illustration of how it looked. The witness had reportedly noticed the oval-shaped object when he was outside talking to a friend.
"This object looked to be about 1,500 to 3,000 feet up, and was much lower than any of the jets passing through at the time," the witness said as quoted by Examiner.
"It looked like it should pass directly over our heads. There was no sound from this object and it looked like it could be the size of a small automobile."
Describing the object the witness said, "Kind of oval in shape, it had three major colors which flashed extremely fast and bright. The front color was red, the middle was the white color and was extremely bright. The back of the object flashed an orange-ish red. The flashing was as best as I can describe being like fireworks. The flashing lights were so bright that it would hide the object as if the light rays were being projected outward away from the craft."
Kentucky has reported nine UFO sightings in March and is 14th highest UFO reporting state in the US. California is the highest with 53 UFO sighting reports.

I was standing in my backyard having a cigarette and i saw what I thought was a lantern crossing the sky above the roof tops in my suburb gainig altitude and travelleling at some speed. I thought nothing of it. I walked to the other side of my garden and it appeared in the distance over my roof line travelling in a northwards direction gainig altitude and speed away from me and into the darkened clouds then disappearing. I wasn't sure at the time what it was. (Bright orange orb). Then I seen two more orange orbs following in a similar direction a 30 - 60 seconds between each sighting. The last was closer and seemed brighter but followed the same flight path as the first two. There was no noise I could hear. I was fixated on them and unfortunetley didn't get any pictures.I just stared at them and was trying to work out what I could be seeing. I dismiss them being a lantern as they were really bright orange and disappeared from view within a minute. Also there was hardly any wind. Quite a freaky experience as I have never seen anything like this before. Hopefully I won't be the only person reporting this as I live in a populated area of Melbourne. This sighting has happened at night, the only feature I could see was the bright orange orbs. The date is the 14/06/2013. Sighting ocurred at 10.15pm
