Yes, we all know. Kenneth Arnold with the Flying Saucers in the Private Plane.
Nothing wrong with it. Its an important part of cultural history.
But I get tired of hearing and telling the story. As Richard Dolan makes clear in his UFOs and the National Security State, vol 1., while Foo Fighter were something of a curiosity, ghost rockets in 1946 were anything but quaint or forgotten lore, they were the center of serious international concern and diplomacy. And the cases that are identified with UFOs started rising in quantity almost a month before Arnold's sighting.
There are plenty of good reasons to look back at that time. I think it is very important. But another "raise the glass" to Arnold's saucers, I just can't do it.
What I can do instead is note the vibrant success of the whole idea, sixty years on. A quote from a Wired magazine Arnold-60 retrospective got me thinking
"But never have flying saucers been a bigger part of the zeitgeist than they are now."
I initially scoffed at the notion, then I thought about it some more. The issue still gets overt government attention, whether to open files to the interested public or to continue investigating (as the UK does). Reports of UFO sightings are made on a daily basis, though one must generally look to interested parties who collate reports to know this. And as strange as it sounds, some in the press give it at least a modicum of respect. For example, one wholy unscientific way to gauge this is using Google Trends, the search engine's tool that shows the amount of searching done on a topic. For example, lets pit UFOs against some other Spooky topics (click on the image to enlarge it).
I know we could use other terms for all of these four biggies, but these are the terms most likely to be used in the media. Ghosts beat out the other three dramatically in general searches by the public. But we have to assume this includes all sorts of uses of the word, since it is a common noun used in many ways. But for the sake of our unscientific argument, lets assume that applies to news stories as well. That's the interesting thing. The spread between "ufo" and "ghost" in the news media is much narrower than it is for the general public, and at times "ufo" eclipses "ghost." One could suggest, again on data that need more examination to really mean something, that the news media actually has a soft-spot for UFOs, as in Keith Olbermann's recent take on the reports of mile-wide UFOs over the English Channel.
I'm not sure why that is, because there isn't enough data yet. Most polls and studies show a college degree increases the likelihood of believing in paranormal or other similar topics, though a relatively recent survey of Oklahoma college students has extraterrestrials (not exactly UFOs, but close enough for most people) not doing so well in comparison with ghosts and psychics. Brenda Denzler's ethnographic work in Lure of the Edge (see book ads in sidebar) notes that education is much higher amongst those in the UFO community than in the general American populace. While academia largely ignores the subject, with the exception of Contactees and increasingly abduction, the media and communications professionals that attend these schools, and their peers in other fields, do not.
Beyond the media, much has been made of the decline of traditional UFO groups and organizations. But it has become clear that this is not due as much to lack of interest as to technological change, specifically the internet. As Brown notes in his book on Ghost Hunters of the South (also in the sidebar), none of the groups he interviewed existed before 1991, and he believes this is directly tied to the rise of the internets. And ghost hunting can be an inherently social activity, with organized hunts taking place on scheduled days planned in advance, occurring in groups, and having an element of fun. By contrast, most ufological activities cannot boast such appeals, and for this reason the field has a significant "loner" aspect (not antisocial, but the activities are often those of an individual, not a group) to it outside of the conferences.
Of course, the image of the UFO and its occupants is now a standard part of our cultural vocabulary now, to the point that the symbol can be used to reference outer space or related topics without any intended tie-in to UFO reports and the like. The UFO isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
In November and December 1980, the eastern side of Britain was experiencing a major UFO sighting wave. There were chases of UFOs by police cars near the coast, a UFO that overflew an oil rig in the North Sea, and the wave culminated in the famous events on the East Anglian coast at Rendlesham Forest. Just a month before these landings beside those NATO air bases, one of the most impressive alien abduction cases took place in the small Penninemill town of Todmorden, West Yorkshire, right in the centre of Britain's most active window area known locally as "UFO Alley".
Police Constable Alan Godfrey was on patrol on the night of 28 November 1980. Just before dawn he drove along Burnley Road on the edge of Todmorden looking for some cows that had been reported missing. They were only found after sun-up, mysteriously relocated in a rain-soaked field without hoofmarks to indicate their passage. Giving up his nocturnal hunt, Godfrey was about to go back to base to sign off duty when he saw a large mass a few hundred yards ahead. At first, he thought it was a bus coming towards him that took workers to their jobs in town and that he knew passed about 5:00 a.m. But as he approached, he realized that it was something very strange. It was a fuzzy oval that rotated at such speed and hovered so low over the otherwise deserted highway that it was causing the bushes by the side to shake.
The police officer stopped, propped onto his windscreen a pad that was in the patrol car to make sketches of any road accidents, and drew the UFO. Then there was a burst of light, and the next thing he knew he was driving his car again, further along Burnley Road, with no sign of the UFO. Godfrey turned around and examined the spot where the UFO had hovered. The road was very wet as it had rained heavily earlier in the night. But just at this one location was a circular patch where the roadway had been dried in a swirled pattern. Only when back at the police station did he realise that it was a little later than he had expected - although any missing time was probably no greater than 15 minutes from estimates later taken on site. Concerned as to possible ridicule, Godfrey at first chose not to make an official report, but changed his mind later that day when he discovered he was not alone.
After breakfast that morning, a driver who had been on Burnley Road three miles further out at Cliviger reported seeing a brilliant white object and contacted Todmorden police. The time matched that of Alan Godfrey's. Furthermore, a police patrol from an adjacent force (Halifax) had been engaged in a stakeout for stolen motorcycles on the moors of the Calder Valley and had witnessed a brilliant blue-white glow descending into the valley towards Todmorden shortly before Godfrey experienced his close encounter. Their story, when it reached Todmorden police station, formed a second match. Encouraged by this news Godfrey filed an official report, but was surprised when police chose to release the story to the local newspaper the following week. From here, UFOlogists discovered the case and a lengthy investigation was mounted by a Manchester-based UFO group.

Billy Booth has this item from May about a UFO encounter in Redmond, Oregon. Bizarre Event in Redmond, Oregon. The incident was reported to Oregon MUFON.
A very bizarre event occurred on May 19, 2012 in Redmond, Oregon. This event involved lights in the sky and an elderly man being injured by some type of energy beam.
The woman involved was doing dishes. Her sink has a window in front of it, allowing a view of the grounds around one side of the home. The land is part of the Oregon/Washington BLM, or Bureau of Land Management. The program makes use of 16 million acres, setting it outside for wildlife, recreation, timber harvest, livestock grazing, mineral extraction and more.
While she was finishing up the family dishes, she noticed two glowing objects that would have been over BLM land. The objects appeared to be at least 20 feet apart. They were sitting in the sky, looked to be of a rectangular shape, with a bluish color.
The couple, in their seventies, went to explore the strange lights in the woods. I find this very interesting behavior. Despite the dark, their age and the overall strangeness of odd blue lights and unpleasant physical feelings (zapping electrical type energy, etc.) first the husband, then the wife and husband together, go out to investigate. As so often happens with UFO encounters, humans will pursue the event even though it is dark, or in the middle of nowhere, or just plain overall weirdness...on the other hand, as we also know, often overwhelming apathy can take over and witnesses will simply say "Oh, how odd" and then go off to sleep as if nothing had happened. Both responses to UFO encounters are extreme (I sure wouldn't be brave enough to walk out into the dark in the woods after seeing unusual lights -- or "would" I?) yet, there it is.

UFO SIGHTING IN NIANGUA, MISSOURI ON JUNE 10TH 2013 - OBSERVED A BRIGHT SPHERE APPROACHING OVERHEAD FROM WEST. WENT OVER HOUSE HEADED EASTERLY; SEEMED TO BE TRAVELING THE CURVE OF THE ROAD, BUT REMAINED ON SOUTHERN SIDE OF ROAD WHICH WAS TREED.
I was taking a small bag of garbage to the garbage unit out in the front yard. I walked out the front door and glanced up, watching birds. Something shiny caught my attention and I looked up and saw a sphere approaching from the west. At first I thought the sun was simply reflecting off of it, but it was too bright and as it moved the light didn't waver as it would have were it merely reflecting light. My first thought was that it reminded me of a satellite in the night sky. The way it moved, the single, unwavering light, and no sound. But of course it wasn't a satellite. Our house is surrounded by tall trees. The object skimmed over the treetops; perhaps about 35 to 40 feet above them. There was absolutely no noise coming from it. I looked away as I went down the steps towards the garbage can, then looked back up as I stepped onto the yard. It was finally dawning on me this was not something you look away from. It was now going over the house, still shining brightly like a powerful light bulb. It was moving along at a pretty good clip; maybe about 40 to 45 miles an hour. Lost sight of it for a second as it disappeared behind some treetops, but I trotted to the driveway and it came back into view for another couple of seconds, still heading easterly, before it again disappeared behind treetops. It would have gone over my neighbor's house next, but only because its path seemed to be following the road rather than heading in a strict eastern direction. It's path was bending slightly north as it made its way across our property and disappeared from view, as does the road. The south side of the road ~ which I live on and which the object was flying over ~ is fairly heavily treed as opposed to the north side, which is more open farm field. It occurred to me after the object disappeared that this was likely just a drone used by law enforcement, but as I pondered the event it seems to me that drones are typically used for spying, which requires stealth. So why would it be emitting light, and a very bright one at that? Furthermore, I've looked at many pictures of drones and none look like this object. Additionally, the speed was surprising. It was moving considerably fast and again, I'm not sure high-speed capabilities are characteristic of law-enforcement drones (or drones in general).

Unidentified objects moving across the night sky in Losiny Ostrov,Moscow, Russia recently.One grouping of lights appears as if a triangle craft,hovering slowly, whilst another group forms a line almost.
It was the 2nd July 2011 and the video zooms in and out a number of times consequently the film is somewhat jumpy and difficult to focus on.Judging by the light it was early evening,twilight and after a while the triangle drifted and became a line as some of the light configuration faded from view.
So was this a suspected UFO as in Alien craft ? or just another bunch of Chinese lanterns drifting across the night sky ? I am inclined to think Chinese lanterns.So how can I tell ? well Chinese lanterns gradually rise up through the atmosphere and fade as they disappear behind thin cloud, disagree then comment....

As the camera focuses as if magically a fleet of so called UFOs appear, really ! If we were all so gullible we might believe it is so.However most viewers aren't that thick !
Some smart arse is blowing soap bubbles from the right and the camera catches them as they waft by, giving the impression of objects high in the sky and a strange light refraction gives the impression of UFOs.

On 6-23-2012 at 10:30pm my partner and I saw approximately 15 UFOs cross through the night sky and disappear in cloud cover. We were in a NE facing room on the 2nd story of our house and suddenly saw 2 bright balls of light coming from under our line of sight (obscured by houses, trees, etc) and elevating higher into the sky as they traveled in an Easterly direction. We tried looking through binoculars to get a better idea of what we were looking at, but that ended up being fruitless as we were at a distance of 1-2 miles away, as they still just looked like balls of light. As soon as the first two disappeared into the cloud cover another two appeared from where the first had originated. That seemed to open the flood gates, as there were never less than 2 in the visible sky, and yet never more than 4. This went on for several minutes until finally one seemed to slow down and hover as it appeared to wait for what ended up being the last ball of light to make its way across the sky. We are in one of the flight paths of PDX, and routinely see planes and helicopters come and go. Of course we immediately thought they were planes, but that thought quickly left. If these were planes, they were unlike any we've ever seen. They were *bright* balls of yellow/white light (no blinking, no red or blue lights), completely silent, moved more methodically, were plentiful and in quick succession, and then of course there is the issue of the 2nd to last object stopping and hovering as it appeared to wait for the last object to catch up.

A group of Pacific, MO, witnesses report watching what looked like aircraft "shooting at" a group of about 20 UFOs moving overhead at 11 p.m. on May 7, 2011, according to May 9 testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
They first noticed the UFOs.
"We saw them fly in straight lines and would turn unlike any aircraft I have ever seen," the reporting witness stated. "They would be moving slow and then stop and then just dart. We also saw one fly right over our house, and when it got above us it glowed a bright white."

Last month, Toronto Police received several reports of UFO sightings in North York.
In videos uploaded by Finch Street resident Sarah Chun, 36, a string of flashing diagonal lights can be seen, with a flowing object high above them.
"If it was something dangerous and we could do something under the criminal code, we might. Police would go try and check it out," Sergeant Barry White, 32 Division, told the Toronto Star. "But to actually go and investigate it further as a UFO - I don't think we would. I'm trying not to laugh!"
The sightings have yet to be explained.
Now another UFO sighting is making headlines on the west coast.
On July 17, Western Canada news organization Castanet News posted a video about the efforts to stop the Smith Creek Wildfire in West Kelowna.

Exopolitics guru Stephen Bassett has just issued a press release trumpeting a petition he recently created in which he urges the Obama administration to investigate and make public information about UFO incursions at nuclear weapons sites, as revealed by seven U.S. Air Force veterans at my September 27, 2010 press conference in Washington D.C. which CNN streamed live:
Over the past four decades, I have interviewed more than 130 ex-U.S. military personnel who have reported ongoing UFO activity at ICBM sites, nuclear weapons depots, and nuclear detonation test ranges. The seven individuals who participated in the press conference-co-sponsored by former USAF Captain Robert Salas-have provided affidavits relating to their still-classified experiences. In his March 28, 2012 press release, Bassett provides his contact information for journalists who might wish to interview him about the petition. Unfortunately, Bassett simply is not a reliable source of information on the nuclear weapons-related UFO incidents. Indeed, many researchers question his basic credibility as a spokesman on the topic of UFOs in general. I am among that group, however, I will confine my remarks here to addressing the factual errors and imprecise language found in the release.
Excerpts From Stephen Bassett's Press Release, Titled "White House Petition Raises Questions Regarding Nuclear Weapons Tampering"
SB: Washington, DC -- A petition calling attention to extraordinary testimony from former ranking members of the United States Air Force has been posted on the White House website.
RH COMMENTS: "Ranking members, Mr. Bassett? This inaccurate statement demonstrates your reportorial incompetence and/or your tendency to hype the facts. While the USAF officers to whom you refer include a retired colonel and lieutenant colonel, as well as former captains and a former enlisted man, none of these individuals can accurately be called a "ranking member" of the U.S. Air Force.
These persons' testimony is of course tremendously important but to misrepresent, intentionally or not, their previous standing in the U.S. Air Force hierarchy only complicates the issue by providing ammunition to UFO debunkers who will seize any and every opportunity to discredit their statements based only on secondary, inaccurate commentary about them by persons such as yourself. (At least you didn't call them all "generals" as one incompetent reporter did.)
SB: "The petition reads as follows: WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO ask Defense Secretary Panetta to respond to mounting evidence for nuclear weapons tampering by extraterrestrial craft."
RH COMMENTS: Okay, Mr. Bassett, that's my own "opinion" as well, although I would have said, "...tampering by "those presumably aboard" extraterrestrial craft." As I write in my 2008 book "UFOs and Nukes":"After researching the UFO 'phenomenon' for 39 years, I must conclude that the technology involved is so advanced that a human origin for it can be automatically ruled out in almost every bona fide sighting case. The radar data alone substantiate the presence of unknown craft in our atmosphere whose capabilities are vastly beyond our own aircraft and which defy known aerodynamic principles.
Therefore, the available facts suggest to me that extraterrestrial visitation, by one or more races of beings, is occurring. I further contend that such visitation accounts for all of the nuclear weapons-related incidents presented in this book, as well as the secrecy surrounding those events. In my view, the essential message being conveyed by our visitors is this: As long as nuclear weapons exist, they remain a potential threat to the future of humankind and to the planet itself. Get rid of them!"However, Mr. Bassett, I am careful to say in my book, "While overwhelming empirical evidence is not yet available, at least in the public domain, to confirm an extraterrestrial origin for UFOs, it can at least be said that some as-yet unexplained mystery has been thrown in the faces of those who planned, and still plan, to use these terrifying weapons."
I understand that my nuanced summation of the available evidence will go over the heads of those who view the UFO phenomenon in black-and-white terms but given that I am, as you say, the principle researcher on the UFO-Nukes Connection, my criticism of your imprecise commentary on my findings is valid and noteworthy.
SB: Since 1992 government witnesses of high rank have been coming forward with evidence regarding incidents in which extraordinary craft of unknown origin have tampered with nuclear weapons facilities around the world.
RH COMMENTS: 1992? Oh really, Mr. Bassett? Actually, my first ex-USAF sources-including a couple of retired colonels-agreed to be interviewed in the early 1970s. In 1981, when I first embarked on the college lecture circuit, those persons' testimony became a matter of public record.
SB:...One of the incidents addressed took place at a Malmstrom Air Force Base nuclear missile launch complex in March of 1967. Former ICBM launch officer Salas testified to missiles being shut down in silo after a craft of unknown origin hovered directly over the complex. Other testimony dealt with the 1986 RAF Bentwaters base incident in the United Kingdom.
RH COMMENTS: Actually, the events at RAF Bentwaters occurred in December 1980, not in 1986. But considering the other inaccuracies found in your press release, I suppose I am belaboring the point.
ROBERT SALAS' INPUT
My co-sponsor at the UFOs and Nukes press conference, former USAF Captain Bob Salas, has written an article about Bassett's dubious contributions to the UFO debate titled "The Idiocy of the Disclosure Movement" in which he said:"Stephen Bassett's (or Steven Greer's depending on which one is talking) Disclosure Project has been ineffectually trying to penetrate [the] door of secrecy since 2001. They have presumably tried to achieve disclosure by enticing speakers (myself among them) to tell as many stories, theories, philosophies, reports, and conjectures as possible during these conferences. I say presumably because these pointless exercises have been so ineffective in gaining serious public attention that one might conclude they were intentionally designed to keep disclosure from happening.
They seem to have achieved one probable objective of those who would maintain the secrecy, i.e., 'to keep the public confused and unsure about the subject.' The hallmark of these Exopolitics Conferences is generally unsupported statements and conjecture-lots of conjecture.
The mainstream media has not gotten on the bandwagon because there is little substance to talk about...The Exopolitics groupies are simply hurling whatever they can get their hands on in every direction."Salas has many other relevant comments and his brief, well-argued article should not be passed-by, at least by anyone seriously interested in the important issues involved with the inevitable announcement of the UFO reality by world governments.
(I will note here that another incompetent commentator on the UFO-Nukes Connection, Expolitics big-wig Dr. Michael Salla, has already muddied the waters by endorsing a hoax perpetrated by notorious con-artist Bill Knell, relating to veteran newsman Walter Cronkite's supposed witnessing of a nukes-related UFO incident. After I publicly took him to task, Salla eventually recanted his endorsement of the hoax but then wrote a scathing article saying that I and other longtime ufologists were unfairly criticizing the Exopolitics movement-I guess because, unlike the Exos, we require credible, vetted sources and, as often as possible-given the high-level classification assigned to national security-related UFO events-verifiable documentation that supports our sources' statements, before we publish our findings.)
In any case, Mr. Bassett, I agree "in principle" that ongoing efforts should be made by U.S. citizens to push for our government's disclosure of the UFO reality and, in particular, the incidents involving nuclear weapons. As I say in my book:For me, one of the most important UFO-related issues has always been political and philosophical in nature. Our country's government has been proclaimed to be 'of the people, by the people, and for the people.' If this is indeed the case-and democratic principles do in fact guide our national policies-then a relative handful of people at the Pentagon, CIA, NSA, and the other intelligence agencies, must not be permitted to retain full and unchallenged discretionary power in a matter so momentous as the reality of UFOs. While the official disclosure about our visitors' existence and presence here must be handled with great care and consideration, it is nevertheless advisable and ultimately unavoidable. The basic question is whether a secret as important as alien visitation should continue to be hidden from the American people, and the rest of humanity, decade after decade.
As I see it, the ongoing UFO intervention in U.S. strategic affairs is now a tale that needs to be told, in unflinching terms, to our legislative assemblies, if possible, but from the rooftops if necessary. All bold endeavors bear both planned-for and unintended consequences. The inevitable admission by U.S. government officials that our nuclear weapons have long been monitored, and at times compromised, by those of unknown origin and objectives, is not without its perils. But the facts will-and should-become known, sooner or later, by one means or another, in a society such as ours. And that's a good thing. After all, isn't that how a democracy is supposed to operate?" Of course, implicit in my position is the fundamental premise that those who are publicly petitioning our government representatives and/or shouting from the rooftops, so to speak, by posting information about the cover-up on the Internet, be competent, informed spokespersons for the Disclosure cause.
Linking well-documented UFO activity at nuclear weapons sites with the nonsense routinely offered up the Exopolitics crowd-such as the supposedly-verified knowledge of who our Visitors are, what their game plan is, how they would interact with humans if only their reality were to be acknowledged by the government, etc.-only serves to degrade the integrity of the important nukes-related evidence found in declassified documents and ex-military witness testimony. This is the key reason I am writing such a highly-critical article, to warn people, especially journalists, to steer clear of Stephen Bassett when it comes to the topic of the UFO-Nukes Connection.
"When I telephoned Bob Salas earlier today, prior to writing this, he told me that he was concerned that Bassett was trying to make himself the "point of contact" for any journalists who wished to learn more about the revelations divulged at our press conference or in our two books, UFOs and Nukes" and "Faded Giant." We both agreed that this would be a very worrisome development, given Bassett's non-involvement with the research, his apparent inability to accurately report the facts we have gathered, and the great likelihood that he would try to entwine our well-documented material with his mostly-bogus Exopolitical notions and claims.
Of course, no matter what I or anyone else says, there will always be some number of people who will gobble up the Exopolitics party-line without a giving a second thought to whether the occasionally valid but mostly unfounded "facts" offered by the group really have merit or actually provide any genuine insights into the coming paradigm-shift that will ensue once Disclosure occurs.
Regardless, Mr. Bassett, if any members of the media actually contact you in response to your latest press release, please remember to tell them 1) you had nothing to do with UFOs and Nukes press conference, 2) your release's summation of the event and the research underlying it is factually-flawed, 3) your attempts to ingratiate yourself with me prior to the event were quickly rebuffed and 4) I think your approach to promoting UFO Disclosure is lacking in credibility and, therefore, counterproductive.
